Austria was never meant to be a separate trip for us. It was a little detour during our time in Switzerland, with just one night in Salzburg squeezed into the itinerary.

Was that enough time?

Absolutely not.

But somehow, even with only about a day and a half, Salzburg managed to become one of those places we still remember so clearly.

Most of our time was spent simply exploring the city—wandering through the historic streets, taking in the architecture, and trying to see as much as we possibly could before it was time to leave.

But there was one thing I really wanted to do while we were there:

The Sound of Music tour.

Because if you are going to Salzburg, how do you not?

There was just one problem.

With our limited time and very little flexibility in our schedule, every organized Sound of Music tour that worked for us was completely sold out.

So naturally, I came up with another plan.

I told Sarah, “I’ll give us our own Sound of Music tour.”

What could possibly go wrong?

We rented bicycles that were supposedly e-bikes, which sounded perfect for cruising around Salzburg from one filming location to another.

Except there was one small issue.

There was absolutely no propulsion.

None.

So instead of effortlessly gliding through Salzburg on our fancy electric bikes, off we went, pedaling the old-fashioned way.

At first, everything was going surprisingly well.

We had our bikes. I had my plan. We were seeing Salzburg.

For a brief moment, it actually seemed like my self-guided Sound of Music tour might be a success.

And then things went a little sideways.

Actually, more than a little.

But that part of the story deserves its own space—and you can read exactly what happened in our Funny Moments section.

Even with the bike adventure, the sold-out tours, and the fact that we barely scratched the surface of Salzburg, our short time in Austria was incredibly memorable.

One night definitely wasn’t enough.

But it was enough to leave us wanting to come back.
