We’re Going to Run Out of Fucking Fruit

Somewhere over the Pacific, after what already felt like a very long journey to Australia, it was finally time for breakfast.

The flight attendants started making their way down the aisle, giving everyone two options: fruit or a hot breakfast.

We could hear the responses from the rows ahead of us, and almost everyone seemed to be choosing the fruit.

Fruit.

Fruit.

More fruit.

By the time they reached us, Sarah and I had already decided we wanted the same thing, so when the flight attendant asked what we would like, we both chose the fruit breakfast.

Apparently, so had half the plane.

A few seconds later, the flight attendant turned to the other attendant and, in the strongest Australian accent imaginable, announced:

“We’re going to run out of fucking fruit.”

Sarah and I both heard it.

And neither of us reacted.

At least not immediately.

There was this brief moment where I just sat there staring straight ahead, wondering if I had actually heard what I thought I had heard.

Surely not.

Flight attendants do not usually walk down the aisle casually dropping F-bombs over breakfast supplies.

Maybe I misunderstood her.

Maybe the Australian accent had somehow transformed another perfectly innocent word into “fucking.”

Except there really were not many other words that fit that sentence.

The flight attendant continued down the aisle like absolutely nothing unusual had happened, while Sarah and I sat silently beside each other, both apparently having the exact same internal conversation.

Once she was safely out of earshot, we finally turned and looked at each other.

And I am pretty sure we both said at almost exactly the same time:

“Did I hear what I think I just heard?”

Yep.

We had both heard it.

We had been on a lot of flights over the years, but neither of us could remember ever hearing a flight attendant get quite that passionate about the fruit supply.

And honestly?

It made the flight better.

There was something incredibly refreshing about hearing a completely unfiltered reaction from someone who had clearly been watching passenger after passenger choose fruit and had finally realized the math was no longer working in her favor.

No polished airline announcement.

No “Unfortunately, fruit selections may become limited.”

Just:

We’re going to run out of fucking fruit.

Welcome to Australia.

We had not even landed yet, and somehow it already felt like we were getting a proper introduction.
